Throwback 2024 | Debut 50th, Tours & Friends

While I’ve been immersed in intensive teaching at Peabody, I was also excited to prepare for a busy spring, which included masterclasses at the Manhattan School of Music and UCLA, and a recital tour to Schloss Gödens in Ostfriesland, Palais Lichtenau in Potsdam, and the Bösendorfer Salon in Vienna—three deeply personal venues for me (May 17, 21, and 22).

The Brahms Concerto with the Incheon Philharmonic on June 21 at the Incheon Arts Center was especially meaningful. Exactly fifty years ago, in December, I gave my debut concert with the same orchestra under the baton of the late Professor Jung-Suk Kim.

I still have much to discover about America. The 2024 summer festival season took me from coast to coast, and in addition to conducting masterclasses and giving individual lessons, I performed solo recitals and collaborated in chamber music. Experiencing the distinct cultural heritage of both coasts was especially enriching. I visited the Art of Piano in San Francisco, the Rebecca Penneys Piano in Tampa, Florida, the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Maine, the Adamant Summer Music School in New Hampshire, the Atlanta International Piano Festival in Maine, and back to San Francisco for the Bay Piano Fest.

In December, I was joined by my esteemed colleagues—Hyunah Yu Brody (soprano), Soovin Kim (violin), Milena Pajaro van de Stadt (viola), and Edward Arron (cello)—for my faculty recital at Peabody. Together, we performed works by Wolf, Brahms, and Schumann. It was a deeply meaningful way to close out 2024, and I was truly grateful for their refined and inspiring musicianship.

Sarah Achenbach interviewed me this spring and released a beautiful article “Awakening the senses” on Peabody magazine Spring 2024. Click to read the full article.
